SS POLITICAL IDEOLOGY: A READING LIST
A WORLD FUTURE FUND STUDY IN DOCUMENTARY HISTORY With its control over the police, significant parts of the German armaments industry, a vast concentration and labor camp system, and even entire countries (e.g., Denmark in 1944), the SS was the organizational foundation upon which the totalitarian political system of the Third Reich rested. Located at the center of this empire was Heinrich Himmler, a man whose hold on personal political, police, and administrative power in Nazi Germany was exceeded only by that of Adolf Hitler. One cannot properly research and understand the inner workings of the Nazi state and the SS, or the racial theories on which the SS was based without studying Heinrich Himmler. From January 1929, when Hitler named him head of the then tiny SS, to the collapse of Nazi Germany in 1945, Himmler was the man who would shape the SS according to his vision of what the organization should be. It is because of Himmler's central importance to the history of Nazi Germany that we have prepared this reading list of sources on Himmler and the SS for use by researchers. This list includes published copies of Himmler's writings and speeches, official SS publications, official Nazi Party publications, the memoirs and writings of leading SS officers, and scholarly studies on the SS. Serious study of the SS remains necessary, including the philosophical origins of the organization, the quasi-religious aspects of its existence, the historical-organizational principles upon which it was based, and its function within the Nazi State. Because the SS was to a large extent the result of Himmler's vision, we have prepared this list of primary sources, and important secondary works in order to facilitate research on the SS. It is our hope that in providing these sources we may stimulate research on the SS and on the man who was its leader. Please note that while extensive, this list is not comprehensive.
We generally have not included sources on the Waffen SS because of the great
deal of work that has been carried out on that subject already. Many of
the sources listed here are difficult to find so when it has been possible we
have included the library call numbers. NOTE: A BRIEF STATEMENT OF PUBLICATIONS PRINCIPLES The World Future Fund serves as a source of documentary material, reading lists, and internet links from different points of view that we believe have historical significance. The publication of this material is in no way whatsoever an endorsement of these viewpoints by the World Future Fund, unless explicitly stated by us. As our web site makes very clear, we are totally opposed to ideas such as racism, religious intolerance, and communism. However, in order to combat such evils, it is necessary to understand them by means of the study of key documentary material. For a more detailed statement of our publications standards click here. PUBLISHED HIMMLER SPEECHES OFFICIAL SS PUBLICATIONS POSTWAR PUBLICATIONS BY FORMER NAZIS AND SS OFFICERS BOOKS AND ARTICLES ON THE SS PUBLISHED HIMMLER SPEECHES AND WRITINGS ATTRIBUTED TO HIMMLER Note: This list includes several published copies of Himmler's speeches that appeared before the collapse of Nazi Germany. These publications have been included here because they may be more accessible than archival collections of Himmler's speeches. This list can be used in conjunction with a detailed list of Himmler's speeches that we have prepared. To the best of our information this is the most complete list on the web.
